Coconut

Comments

Picture
large, oval, brown seed of a tropical palm (Cocos nucifera L.), consisting of a hard shell lined with edible white flesh and containing a clear liquid. It grows inside a woody husk, surrounded by fiber.

At an immature stage, the fruit (water coconut) contains mainly water and a little jellylike meat instead of the hard, white flesh found in mature coconuts. Immature green nuts are usually sold trimmed and shaped, without the husk, dipped in 1 to 3% sodium meta-bisulfite for 2 to 5 min and then wrapped in plastic film.
The edible white flesh of the mature coconut is often shredded and used in food and confections or for the extraction of coconut oil.
Coconut can be considered a fruit or a nut, although it is most commonly referred to as a drupe.  Coconut oil is high in saturated fats and should be considered solid fat when it comes to its nutritional value.
Coconut is also high in dietary fiber, iron, potassium, and magnesium.
