
Dysuria is any discomfort associated with urination. Abnormally frequent urination (e.g., once every hour or two) is termed urinary frequency - an abrupt, strong, often overwhelming, need to urinate. Medical term for excessive passing of urine (increase in total volume) is Polyuria. An excessive volume of urination for an adult is more than 2.5 liters of urine per day. Normally, adults pass between 3 cups (700 milliliters) and 3 quarts (3 liters). of However, this can vary depending on the liquid intake.
- Bladder infections (most common in women and children)
- Urinary incontinence (including stress related)
- Noncancerous enlargement of the prostate gland (most common in men over 50)
- Stones in the urinary tract
Common causes of polyuria are:
- Uncontrolled diabetes mellitus
- Drinking too much fluid (could be because of excessive thirst aka polydipsia)
- Diabetes insipidus
- Diuretic drugs or substances such as alcohol or caffeine
